Hey car friends, Mike here! Today, I went to AutoZone and had them test my car battery for free. Turns out, I need to replace it. It’s a pretty straightforward process, and I’m going to walk you through it.

What You’ll Need:

  • New battery
  • Gloves
  • Tools (wrench or socket set)
  • Wire brush (for cleaning terminals)

Step 1: Removing the Old Battery

First things first, make sure your car is turned off. You don’t want any surprises!

  1. Remove the Battery Terminals:
    • Start with the negative (black) cable. Loosen the terminal using a wrench (remember: righty tighty, lefty loosey). Once loose, carefully remove the terminal and tuck it away so it doesn’t accidentally touch the battery.
    • Next, remove the positive (red) cable in the same manner.
  2. Remove the Battery Bracket:
    • Most batteries have a bracket holding them down. Remove any bolts securing the bracket and carefully set it aside.
  3. Remove the Old Battery:
    • Lift out the old battery. Be cautious as car batteries are heavy. If needed, ask for help or use lifting tools available at AutoZone.

Step 2: Preparing the New Battery

  1. Clean the Terminals:
    • Before installing the new battery, clean the terminal ends using a wire brush. This helps improve the connection.
  2. Install the New Battery:
    • Carefully place the new battery into the battery tray.
  3. Reinstall the Battery Bracket:
    • Secure the battery in place by reinstalling the bracket and tightening any bolts.

Step 3: Reconnecting the Battery Terminals

  1. Reattach the Terminals:
    • Start with the positive (red) cable first. Slide it onto the positive terminal and tighten the nut. Use the wire brush to clean the terminal post if needed.
    • Next, attach the negative (black) cable to the negative terminal and tighten the nut.
  2. Double-check Connections:
    • Ensure both terminals are securely tightened. A loose connection can prevent your car from starting.

Step 4: Testing

  1. Test the Battery:
    • Attempt to start your car. If it starts up, great job! If not, double-check the connections and make sure everything is snug.

Conclusion
